Dad's Farewell Talk
BUILDING UP A RIGHTOUS POSTERITY
By; Jeffrey R Holland February9, 2008
Elder Holland starts off his remarks with a quotation from the First Presidency regarding the need to strength and protects the family.” We call upon parents to devote their best efforts to the teaching and rearing of their children in gospel principles which will keep them close to the church”
Cheryl and I have run our lives and built our family as the Holy Ghost has directed. I hold the priesthood and have blessed, baptized, and confirmed our children and ordained the boys. I am the one who asks the children to pray over the food. This establishes order in the family. Cheryl organizes the Home Evenings in the family and I conduct and she makes the assignments and we teach the children together.
She has full control over the children and everything that is important in the family. She makes the plans, makes the schedule and I drive the car. She receives the inspiration from the Holy Ghost regarding the family. For example:
“Bill, it’s after twelve and Jeff isn’t home yet, I’m getting worried.
“Let’s get dressed.”
Jeff was driving my red. “69” Chevy.truck with no fenders on the back. You couldl spot it a mile away. He was at his girlfriend’s house and his truck was parked in the street. I walked up to the front door and pounded on it with my fist as hard as I could. He wasn’t expecting me.but he knew who it was and came out instantaneously
Cheryl serves an generous portion of love to each of the children. I supply the discipline. But she oversees the discipline to make sure I don’t overdo it. Standing in the corner is my favorite form of punishment.. The children know that if dad is doing something wrong they can stand him in the corner too. This started out as a game, and for the most part I took it very well. But when your mad you don’t want some little kid saying “Daddy, stand in the corner. That is humiliating with a capital “H“.
Our children are powerful. I don’t mean Cheryl’s kids, I mean yours, ours and mine. They are going out into the world to make it better. They are going to leave here and go on missions and marry in the temple and be powerful individuals in whatever they do.
Bill is my oldest. He has delivered papers from the time we moved into the ward. He has worked on cars and on his truck, built the addition on the house, he has been a Bishop in Pleasant Grove. He is preparing to send Joshua into the mission field. soon. He owns a small business and has bigger plans in the future..
Becky delivered newspapers, put her husband through BSU. She worked at Micron and rose to a very responsible position. She was elected to the school board unanimously (she was running unopposed on the ballot). She owns her own photography business. She has sent her son; Brady, I call him (Bugs) on a mission to Singapore. And will sending her second son, Burke, soon. Her husband is in the bishopbric, served a mission in Argentina and speaks Spanish.
Jeff also delivered newspapers, He has a BA from the University in Salt Lake ( I can’t remember what it is called, it’s up on the hill in Salt Lake. He also has a masters degree from Duke University. He serves on the High Counsel in Ohio, he is a CFO of , Contech, and has sperved a mission in Spain.
Julie also delivered newspapers, served a mission to North Carolina. She is a stay at home mom and home schools her children. Her husband in John Spencer and served a mission to California, Spanish speaking and is a very successful mining engineer,
Cheryln, also delivered newspapers. (Delivered papers means getting up at 5’oclock in the morning, packing thebag with newspaper and riding your bike, no matter what kind of weather, rain, shine, snow, sleet and here in West Bountiful, we have some terrible fog. She is a stay at home mom who home schools her children. Her husband Rusty served a mission to Japan, and is a very successful computer programmer.
Amy also delivered newspaper. She is stay at home mom and a very successful house painter, stone mason, deck railing framer, tile setter, mover and packing expert, and a strong support to two missionaries going to Lubbock Texas.
John delivered newspapers. He is very good at keeping his curfew. I don’t think he wanted me out looking for him, for some strange reason. He was a return missionary from Santa Rosa California. He took a rough space and turned it into a great apartment, He did the sewer, modified the foundation, the electrical, plumbing, framing, sheet rock, tiled the bathroom, bought and installed the cabinets and did some stone work. I am going to miss the big shower John.
Marci has delivered papers too, bought and sold two houses in her short lifetime. She is our designer. She picked out the furniture in the front room, coordinated the paint and carpet and did some painting in the front room and the deck. Brian is a return missionary fromr Venezuela. Looks like someone has written in a little note here. It looks like Brian’s handwriting. It says: He can hit the softball a mile.
This isn’t a pattern for any of you to follow but it has worked for us. The priesthood is in their homes. One or both of them in the case of Julie are returned missionaries. They are married in the temple.
As I said in Chad Willey’s class in Sunday School a few weeks ago, I have had an, easy pull. We were talking about the people who moved the handcarts across the country. My handcart is mechanized, fully suspended with shock absorbers and inflatable rubber tires. The wind is at my back. The road rises to meet me and it is paved with the principles and practices and commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ.
We, Cheryl and I, and our family and all of you all walk into a beautiful morning of the Second Coming. It is indescribable! You just have to let your mind go as you read the scriptures and sing the hymns of this beautiful day of peace and rest.
Cheryl and I go to Lubbock Texas with a red hot burning desire to teach and baptize. The Lord has prepared thousands of people of us to teach and baptize. I close by paraphrasing part of the Fourth Section of the D&C. The field is white already to harvest and we are going to thrust in our sickle with our might, I don’t expect to Harvest a hand full. We’re are going to take a bushel basket. In the name Of Jesus Christ amen

Mom's Farewell Talk 1
As you are all aware, Bill and I have accepted a mission call to the Lubbock Texas mission. This has been a lifelong goal for both of us, especially for me as I have always wanted to serve a mission to have some those beautiful missionary experiences that Bill has shared with me throughout our married life. We have already spoke with the mission president and they are very anxious for us to come. The Lubbock mission is one of the largest mission in the Northern hemisphere. It covers West Texas from the Mexico border to the top of the panhandle of Texas and parts of New Mexico. President Robinson asked us to serve in a small town of Ruidoso New Mexico. It is a small resort town, similar to Park City. It borders the Mescalaro Indian Reservation. He wants us to work with the Mescalaro proselyting and building up the kingdom there. We are so excited.
I have been lucky to be a member of the church my whole life. My patriarchal blessing reminds me to always be aware of the noble parents who love me and taught me the gospel and to love the Lord and want to serve him.
My father was asked by his bishop to go on a mission during the great depression in the 1930’s. Everyone thought his mom was crazy for even thinking of sending him at this time. His father died when he was 10 and she was raising the family alone. But his mother encouraged him to accept the call and trust in the Lord. The bishop said they would help to send him and pay his transportation, but when the time came even they didn’t have enough money to give him. Many people who the family owed money to said that would be their donation towards his mission, but it didn’t put cash into their pockets. So my dad asked to leave in the fall to give him enough time to earn money to travel. He remembers his mother packing a small suitcase of limburger cheese and bread for him to eat and off he went to Denmark to serve the Lord for two years. He always remembers the words of his mother, “If the Lord calls we will find a way.”
The day my mom and dad were married in the Manti Temple, they stopped off at the post office to get their mail “just for kicks”. He carried home with him their first letter addressed to Mr. and Mrs. George Christensen. It was a call to serve as Stake missionaries. They served for two years and even carried their first child around in a basket with them that he brought home from his mission.
Both of my brothers served a mission, my dear sweet husband LOVED his mission, all of my sons and one daughter served a mission and many of our daughters married return missionaries. I also have one grandson who has already served his mission to Singapore. Do you see why I have such a desire to serve a mission.
Bill and I began submitting our papers to the bishop in October last year. We filled out the long and lengthy application and began our medical exams. Some time things don’t turn out like you want them to. That darn old computer would freeze up everytime I tried to submit anything. The world news was terrible, swine flu was running rampart, they closed the Nigeria Temple because of unrest in the country – what if I was called there. I began to think maybe little old West Bountiful was a better place to stay. We started to feel the effects of the recession hit our family with three of our children out of work. Then the devastating news that Bill had developed a malignant tumor and would have to have it removed. Fear set in! Was we really suppose to go on a mission? With lots of worry and anxiety I asked Bill to give me a priesthood blessing and I was told “not to fear but have faith and trust in the Lord”. It says in Matt: 19: 26 “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. We re-set our goal for February.
While waiting to resolve our medical problems, we continued to prepare for our mission. We were tested emotionally with many things: I tried to move out of hour home we have been in for 36 years. You know, I began to realize you keep a lot of non-essential things in your home and what was really important. I would have to live with the things I could pack in a suitcase - That is a real challenge. Bill’s brother passed away and we had to make a quick trip to Rhode Island, And my best friend passed away with cancer. I became just plain scared, do I really know enough to teach the gospel to someone else? We got into an accident and wrecked our car. I had to have a root canal within two weeks of leaving for the MTC thus ----the bruise on my cheek. I was afraid to retire and leave the wonderful friends I have worked with for 22 years. What was I doing giving up a good job in a recession! Did I really want to leave my children and grandchildren. Look at all the events we will be missing in their lives. I already have two grandsons preparing for missions in the fall and I’m going to miss both of them. I know there will be marriages, baptisms and blessings, sports activities, dances, Grandma’s weeks in the summer and lots of hugs and kisses. Do I really want to miss these things???
But, I was told in my blessing “Fear Not” “Trust in the Lord” and after an hour fighting with the computer one night we pushed the SEND button. Bishop King and President Eckman quickly called us into their offices for our final interviews and our call was off to church headquarters. I began to relax – Whew! We finally did it! Now we can relax thinking this process would take at least three months.
One month later we all gathered around by phone or in person to see mom and dad open our call. Excitement rang through the air when we found out we were going to Texas. Then I looked down to see our departure date and they gave us one month. Panick stricken I went in the next day to give my notice at work (it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do). I cried all day long. One of the Commissioners said, “if this is what your like when you are happy, I would hate to see you when your sad.”
Through it all, we began to see how the Lord’s invisible hand was working for us all along. All of our issues were being resolved. One by one. We just needed to trust in the Lord. The Lord sent us eight wonderful children who have helped us through this process. They have helped us fix up the house, clean, pack, and try to move out of a house. They listened to us and encouraged us because they know the value of serving a mission. They are proud to have a mom and Dad, grandma and Grandmpa who want to serve a mission. I love my children with all my heart. Thank you for loving us and helping us. If you want to raise a righteous family – just love them, nurture them, sacrifice for them, pray with them, and teach them the ways of the Lord. These blessings will come back to you ten fold.
The Lord knows us. He knows what we need. He knew our hearts wanted to serve a mission, we just needed to trust in him. I repeat the scripture in Joshua 1. 9: “ Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: the the Lord thy God is with thee whiethersoever thous goest.” Just as I was told in my blessing “Fear Not – Trust in the Lord. He will be with you. We had to develop patience and accept that which cannot be changed. We had to be willing to submit to the Lord’s will and trust in him.
I love the Lord with all my heart
I want to thank him for the blessings he has given me.
I want to thank him for this opportunity to serve
I want to thank him for my family
I want to thank him for my companion
I am grateful for a prophet today, President Thomas S Monson
I know that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God
I am grateful for the Book of Mormon and the testimony that it
gives of Jesus Christ
I pray for the Lords blessings to continue to be with us as we try to help others find their way home to our Heavenly Father.
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

Cheryl's Retirement
It has finally happened. Mom has retired!!!! I can't believe it either. The Tax Commission gave me a wonderful retirment party and a lot of people came to see me off.
