While looking for new investigators, we came upon this fish hatchery in Mescalero. They grow their own fish and stock many of the ponds for the other indian tribes. This is unique as the hatchery is run by a natural spring and there are no pumps. The girl we met there is being trained to run the hatchery. She will be the first native american to run it on the reservation. She was a very intelligent and nice girl.
You won't believe the fish. The big dark tanks are loaded with so many fish you could hardly find an empty space. The little blue tank are baby fish. They keep them in the tank until they are about 8 inches and then place them in the big tanks. When you walked along the tanks the fish would jump up and scramble to see if you were going to feed them.
