On our way to District Meeting in Roswell, we were looking the Pecos River and came across this beautiful art gallery in the back woods. This was originally built by the painter Peter Hurd who built it for his wife Henriette Wyeth. Henriette Wyeth was a prominent lady in the east and fell in love with Peter who brought her to New Mexico to the rinconada Valley. Her first home was a broken down home that she was not used to so Peter built her this home to live in. It is beautiful with flowers everywhere and a beautiful sun room. One of the things they bought was a grand piano and they home taught all of their children to make sure they would get the proper education. All of their children because painters except one.
Peter Hurd in known for his paintings for stories for Treasure Island, Robin Hood, and Robinson Crusoe. Henriette was one of the top women painters of the 20th century. She is well known for her portraits.
Peter really liked the sport of Polo but of course it was not known in the wild west. So he constructed a polo field in his field and asked anyone to come and play who could ride a horse. Many indians and mexicans played rough polo with him.
