Fort Stanton is a military fort here in New Mexico. It was established to protect the citizens of the US from the Mexicans and Apache's. Kit Carson, Black Jack Pershing, Billy the Kid, Buffalo Soldiers, all lived here at the beginning of the Civil War. But the main thing was the Mescalero Apache Indians lived here and raided the settlers all the time. In World War II German and Japanese soldiers lived there are prisoners. The Germans actually built a huge swimming pool there and had diving contests. The fort became a hospital for a tuberculosis center for many years. Now it is used as a historical site and practise for re-entactments of history as well as recreational riding of horses.
